The Junior Duck Stamp art competition is just around the corner, and we coordinate the Idaho contest. The purpose of this program is to teach conservation through the arts; students are invited to explore the natural world and learn more about waterfowl identification and wetland habitat by creating their very own art depicting a duck, goose, or swan. Ribbons will be awarded for 25 artists in each age category (Kindergarten-3rd grade, grades 4-6, grades 7-9, grades 10-12). Basic contest guidelines are listed below. For more details, please see contest information or respond to this email with any questions!

Basic contest guidelines:

  • Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible.
  • Home school and independent entries are welcome.
  • Entries must be original, hand-drawn creations and may not be traced or copied from photographs or other artists’ works.
  • Must be a live portrayal of a native North American waterfowl – species are listed in the annual brochure.
  • Art must be 9×12 inches, horizontal, no border around image, and less than 1/4” thick.
  • May be multi-color, black and white, or a single color; rendered in ink, paint, pastel, crayon, or pencil. Techniques may include scratching board, airbrush, linoleum printing, paper collage, dry brush, crosshatch, pointillism, etc.
  • No lettering, words, signatures, or initials on the design.
  • No photography or computer-generated art will be accepted.
  • Entries should not be matted or framed.
  • Tape your signed, completed entry form (English/Spanish) to the back of your entry before mailing.
  • Grades 7-12 must include a reference form (English/Spanish).
  • Submit entries by March 1st to:
    Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge

Talking Book Service

December 6, 2022 By Cascade Library Staff

From Idaho Commission for Libraries:

TBS Serves the State

The Idaho Talking Book Service (TBS) is available to any Idaho resident who is blind, has low vision, or is unable to read standard print due to a visual impairment or certain physical disabilities, such as being unable to turn the pages of a print book. There are other qualifying conditions for TBS, including dyslexia.

At present, there are 3,105 TBS patrons in Idaho, but there are likely many more people in the Gem State who could utilize the Talking Book Service.

If you know of someone who may qualify for the TBS, please have them or their caregiver get in touch with a TBS customer service representative. Call 800-458-3271 or email: [email protected].

With more than 100,000 fiction and nonfiction book titles and about 70 magazines, there is a wide variety of available content.

For more on TBS please see your local public library.
